Meet Jayneel Patel!IT ALL STARTED WITH A DREAM!
I graduated from dental school back in my home country of India in 2011 and was involved in private dental practice for three long years before coming to the United States. After migrating to the United States, I kept chasing my dream to become a licensed practitioner over here. I spent numerous amounts of days preparing myself for the future challenges my journey to dental school was about to bring. My first application cycle to dental school was a heartbreaking failure. After applying to almost everywhere, I did not have any luck getting interview calls despite of having a good GPA and boards scores. My second application cycle gave me little hope as I was waitlisted at a few schools. During that time, I started working in a dental lab and earned CDT license after clearing a couple of exams in dental technology. I relocated from South Carolina to Alabama a year ago and initiated my third application cycle. With a cumulative of experiences as a dentist, dental assistant, and laboratory technician, I strengthened my profile and finally there was a day where I had acceptances from reputable universities including UAB. My eyes were set on UAB School of Dentistry since my very first cycle, which made my transition easy for the International Dentist Program. As an IDP student and part of D3 class, I am proud to be a part of the program. This school offers great environment to learn lifelong values and knowledge as a dentist and as an individual. Our first semester as an IDP student was intensive and involved didactic and preclinical classes. However, we had enough time to learn and ease our transition to the regular D3 class. In addition, this year we have an unprecedented breakout of novel COVID-19 virus, which changed the way of how traditional dentistry is being taught. We are learning newer ways to advance the knowledge, and our faculties are going above and beyond to keep us on track. Overall, my journey from a small town in India to UAB School of Dentistry had taught me many life lessons and skills and humbled me more than ever before.

Meet Zarish Mubarik!Welcome back future dentists! We are excited to bring back our Member Monday posts where each week we highlight the hidden talents of the students at the UAB School of Dentistry. This week, we caught up with Zarish Mubarik, a fourth year student in the International Dentist Program. Zarish completed her dental training in Karachi, Pakistan and moved to Ft. Lauderdale Florida in 2017. She was accepted into UAB’s IDP program in 2018 and will graduate in the class of 2021. Besides being a talented dentist, Zarish has a huge passion for fashion! Take a read below and find out how you too could become a fashion blogger.
I’ve loved fashion and styling since I was very young. I remember sketching my own clothing line when I was in the 5th grade and dreaming about the different designs I wanted to create. What I really enjoy about fashion is experimenting with colors and prints and mixing different aesthetics to bring one look together. I’ve always used it as a creative outlet and to express my individuality. With the discipline and hard work that goes into a career like dentistry, it’s important to find things that you enjoy that can help you unwind and stay in touch with the things that inspire you and ignite your passion. When I am in the middle of a busy and stressful week, what gets me through is having a day planned where I can get some looks together and do a fun photoshoot or styling video. It helps me have something to look forward to and power through the week. I set small goals for myself and it really helps me excel and do better in all aspects of my life. During quarantine, with all the time that we suddenly had to ourselves, I was able to take my love for fashion to the next level and began a fashion brand with my talented mother in law. We design unique, one-of-a-kind, statement outfits hoping to contribute to the sustainable fashion movement and make a niche in that market. For someone interested in fashion and wanting to start blogging about it, I would advise them to buy a few good quality key pieces and learn ways to restyle and repurpose them. I think fashion is taking a positive turn towards being more mindful and not following fading trends. Investing in some basics and allowing your creativity to take the lead and find inventive ways to re-wear pieces while remaining true and authentic to your own personal style!
